Tiger Takedown: Aztec Wrestling Newsletter #11 2017-2018 2/12/2018
The news this week is that the Aztec Wrestling team qualified all 14 wrestlers for the State Tournament.
4 Champions, 7 Runner-ups, 2 Thirds and 1 Fourth place winner will all depart for State on Thursday.
Along the way, Aztec scored 224.5 points which was 28.5 more than 2nd place Farmington. This would be enough to dominate the rest of field for the day. As in anything, there were up and downs, there were wins and losses, stellar performances and some not. One such stellar performance was by Senior 220# Jared O’Toole, who pinned an opponent that he has never beaten before to place himself in the finals. The return of Senior 152# Dominic Dufur, from a rib injury, was a great and needed addition. After missing the District Duals, Freshman Dylan St. Vrain bounced back to win a District title. This year’s State Championship seems to be wide open and anything can happen, so it is a final week of mental preparation. Monday will be the famous Aztec Red Flag Day. This day will test our team’s physical and mental toughness to the max.

Wrestler of the Week: Dylan St. Vrain 9th grade District 1-5A Champion
Historic Trivia: The 1982 Aztec Wrestling team lost the District Championship to Los Lunas in Aztec to turn around and win the State Tournament the next week in the Los Lunas’ gym.
